Comet is Perplexity's Chromium browser with an AI assistant living permanently in the sidebar, reading whatever page you have open.

It can also act on that page, clicking through, filling in forms and working across tabs, which is what separates it from Google Chrome with a chatbot extension bolted on.

The browser is free for everyone, with no trial clock and no daily question limit.

What Comet Actually Does

Open a page and the assistant is already looking at it. Ask "what is this arguing" or "is there a catch in the terms" and it answers from the page in front of you rather than from a search of the whole web, which is the difference between a summary and a guess.

It handles the things people currently open a second tab for: summarising a long article, pulling the key numbers out of a report, explaining a paragraph of legal wording, or condensing a video's transcript.

None of that needs ChatGPT or Grok open in another window, because the assistant already has the page.

The same goes for DeepSeek if that is the assistant you normally reach for.

Where it goes further than the rest is the agent side. Told to compare four laptops across the tabs you have open, or to find the cheapest shipping option on a checkout page, it will navigate and click its way there and report back.

Email, Calendar and the Assistant That Does Things

Connect a Gmail and Google Calendar account and Comet will draft replies, sort the inbox by what actually needs an answer, and put meetings in the diary from the message that proposed them.

This is the feature that sells the browser and it is also the feature that carries the risk, so read the safety section below before you connect anything. The two are the same decision.

Spaces are the quieter win. Each Space keeps its own tabs, notes and assistant conversations together, so switching from a work project to a holiday search does not mean losing either, and it is the same idea Arc Browser popularised before its development stopped.

What It Costs

Nothing. Comet was locked behind Perplexity's most expensive plan when it launched in July 2025, opened to everyone that October, and the browser and its assistant have been free since.

Perplexity's paid plans still exist and they are still optional. Pro at 20 US dollars a month and Max at 200 buy you better models and, on Max, background assistants that keep working while the browser is closed - none of which you need to use Comet as a browser.

There is one add-on worth knowing about. Comet Plus, 5 US dollars a month, bundles paywalled content from a set of publishers into the assistant's answers, and it is included at no extra cost if you already pay for Pro or Max.

The Risk Worth Knowing Before You Connect Anything

An assistant that reads pages and an assistant that follows instructions are the same assistant, and a web page can contain instructions. That is the whole problem, and it has a name: indirect prompt injection.

Security teams have demonstrated it against Comet more than once. Researchers have hidden instructions in white-on-white text, in HTML comments, in a Reddit comment and in an email, and had the assistant read them as commands - fetching a one-time passcode out of a connected inbox in one case, and quietly deleting files in another.

Perplexity has shipped mitigations and researchers have kept finding ways round them, which is the honest state of every agentic browser right now rather than a Comet-specific failing.

Used as a reading and research browser on pages you navigated to deliberately, the risk is small. Given your inbox and told to work through it unattended, it is not, and no amount of Chromium security architecture changes that, because nothing is being exploited - the assistant is doing exactly what it was told.

System Requirements

The file here is the 64-bit Windows installer, and it needs Windows 10 or later. There is no 32-bit build.

Being Chromium underneath, it runs Chrome extensions and renders sites the same way Microsoft Edge and every other Chromium browser does, so nothing on the compatibility side is a surprise. Perplexity publishes no formal RAM figure; if the machine runs Chrome comfortably it will run Comet.

How to Install Comet Browser

• Download the installer from the link below and run it - it is an online installer, so it pulls the rest down itself.
• Let it import bookmarks and passwords from your current browser when it offers, or skip that step if you would rather keep the profiles separate.
• Sign in with a Perplexity account for sync, or use it signed out - the assistant works either way.
• Leave Gmail and Calendar disconnected on the first run, use the browser for a week, and connect them later only if the assistant has earned it.

How It Compares to the Other AI Browsers

The category is smaller than it looks, because it keeps losing members. OpenAI switched ChatGPT Atlas off in August 2026 after less than a year, and Arc stopped development in May 2025, which leaves Comet as the most actively developed of the bunch.

BrowserOS is the closest direct rival and takes the opposite approach, running its agents locally in an open-source Chromium fork rather than through a vendor's servers.

If you want AI without changing browsers, Microsoft Edge and Opera Browser both have assistants built in already, and neither asks you to move your bookmarks anywhere.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

The tell is your browser profile. If the browser you are thinking of replacing is signed in to your bank, your work email and a password manager, that is not the profile to hand an autonomous assistant, and the honest answer is to keep those separate.

For privacy first, Brave Browser blocks ads and trackers out of the box and LibreWolf Browser strips telemetry out of Firefox entirely.

For anonymity rather than privacy, Tor Browser is the only real answer, and it is a different tool for a different job rather than a faster daily driver.

If it was the tab management you wanted rather than the AI, Vivaldi Browser and Zen Browser both go further on layout control than Spaces does.

Floorp Browser gets you the same on a Firefox engine, and Opera GX is the one with CPU and RAM limiters for gaming machines.
