Blackmagic Camera for Windows, which Blackmagic Design actually ships under the name Camera Setup, is the free desktop utility that installs firmware updates and changes settings on URSA, PYXIS, Pocket Cinema and Studio cameras over USB. It is not the Blackmagic Camera phone app, which is a separate product for Android and iPhone.
Two completely different products share the name Blackmagic Camera, and landing on the wrong one wastes everybody's afternoon.

Which one do you want
Own a Blackmagic cinema camera and need to update its firmware? You are in the right place. If you want to shoot video on your phone instead, the phone app is the other page and there is no PC version of it.
What This Software Actually Does
Blackmagic Design publishes this under the name Camera Setup, which is why the file you download is called Blackmagic_Camera_Setup_Windows.zip rather than anything with "Camera" alone in it.
It does two jobs. It installs firmware updates onto the camera itself, and it lets you change camera settings from a keyboard instead of thumbing through menus on a small screen.
Firmware is the software that runs inside the camera. Updating it is how a camera gains new recording formats, better autofocus behaviour or a fix for something that was misbehaving, without you buying anything.
You connect the camera to the PC with a USB cable, open the utility, and it recognises the model and tells you whether an update is waiting.
Which Cameras It Supports
The utility covers the current Blackmagic camera range rather than one specific model, including the URSA family, PYXIS, the Pocket Cinema Camera line, Studio Cameras and Micro Studio Cameras.
One important detail that trips people up: a single Camera Setup release does not always carry new firmware for every camera. Blackmagic ships a version to fix or improve one part of the range, and the other models simply report that they are already current.
So if you install the newest version and your camera says no update is available, nothing has gone wrong. It means the release was not for your model.
What Is In Version 10.2.1
Version 10.2.1 arrived on 31 July 2026 and is a targeted release rather than a broad one.
- Improved H.265 and H.264 recording and playback on the URSA Broadcast G2.
- Manufacturing improvements, which is Blackmagic's usual wording for changes affecting newly built units.
If you do not own an URSA Broadcast G2, there is little reason to rush this one. Updating anyway is harmless, and keeping the utility current means it recognises newer cameras when you get one.
The download page also keeps version 9.6.2, which is worth having if you are working with an older camera body and want a known-good installer to fall back on.
Updating Firmware Without Bricking Anything
A firmware update rewrites the software inside the camera, so this is the one moment where following the order matters.
- Charge the battery fully, or run the camera on mains power. A camera that dies mid-update is the one genuine way to turn this into a repair job.
- Copy anything you still need off the recording media, then install the utility on the PC.
- Connect the camera to the computer with a USB cable and switch the camera on.
- Open Blackmagic Camera Setup. It identifies the model and shows the installed firmware version against the available one.
- Click Update and leave everything alone until it finishes and the camera restarts by itself.
Do not unplug during an update. Pulling the cable or losing power partway through firmware installation can leave the camera unable to start, and that is a service centre problem rather than something you can retry at home.
What You Need To Run It
The utility runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11 on 64-bit systems, and you will need a USB port and cable that match your camera's connector.

Administrator rights are needed for the install, since it loads a driver to talk to the camera hardware.
Why The Download Is Around 5GB
That number is correct, and it surprises everybody the first time.
Camera Setup is not just a small updater that fetches what your camera needs. The download carries the complete firmware image for every camera Blackmagic currently supports, which is why one file covers the whole range from Pocket Cinema bodies up to URSA.
The practical upshot is that the update itself runs entirely offline. Once the file is on your PC, you can update a camera on location with no internet at all, which is the trade Blackmagic has chosen to make.
Worth knowing before you start. Leave room on the drive and give the download time on a slow connection. Nothing has gone wrong if it sits at several gigabytes, and a partial file is the most common reason the installer refuses to open.
The Footage Side, After The Camera Is Updated
Updating firmware is usually the first step in a longer job, and the rest of the chain has its own downloads.
Blackmagic cameras record in BRAW, a raw format that keeps far more picture information than an ordinary video file. To open those files on a PC you need the Blackmagic RAW codec installed.
For quick checking of clips without loading an editor, Blackmagic RAW Player plays BRAW files directly.
DaVinci Resolve is the editing and colour grading application, and the free version handles BRAW natively with no add-on required.
If you need to convert finished exports into something more shareable, HandBrake and FFmpeg both do that job well.
To confirm what a delivered file actually contains, MediaInfo reads out the codec, resolution and bitrate, and there is a browser-based online codec finder for a faster answer.
About The Phone App, Since Most People Arrive Looking For It
The Blackmagic Camera app is a separate free product for Android and iPhone that gives phone video the same manual controls and colour handling as the company's cinema cameras.
It does not run on Windows, and there is no PC port planned. Emulator setups exist but the app depends on phone camera hardware, so the results are not worth the effort.

Who Should Look Elsewhere
If you do not own a Blackmagic camera, this utility has nothing to offer you. It talks to Blackmagic hardware over USB and does nothing at all on its own.
The tell is simple: open it with no camera attached and the window sits empty. That is not a fault, it is the entire design.
